Cyber Monday, and a couple of useful tools.

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

I have a couple of online deals that will be available tomorrow. First one is a thumb drive for under $15.00. It’s a Maxell® USB 360° Flash Drive, 8GB and only $12.99 at OfficeDepot.com. Valid 11.29.2010 only.

Next deal I have is a laptop. The specifications are excellent for the money. Save $220 on a HP G62-337NR Laptop Computer With 15.6″ LED-Backlit Screen & Intel® Pentium® P6100 Dual-Core Processor and buy for $379.99 at OfficeDepot.com. Valid 11.29.2010 only. LED-Backlit, Intel, only $380.00!  Very Nice. Hp’s website states the processor is a 2 Ghz cpu and this model comes with 4 GB of memory, expandable to 8GB.

If you set up your wireless network a long time ago, or maybe your memory is as bad as mine, you might have forgotten your wireless network key. Since your laptop only needed you to enter it once, it’s common to forget it. The answer to the problem is WirelessKeyView, snd it will show you the password you have stored on your network for all the wireless networks you’ve had to add passwords for. Check it out at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html.

If you want to reinstall your operating system fresh on an old PC, because it’s slow, or has gotten infected by malware, or for whatever reason, this next tool will help. DoubleDriver allows you to view all your driversand then lets you backup, restore, save and print the drivers you choose. Check it out at http://boozet.org/dd.htm .

Partition Recovery Tool and File Recovery

Friday, November 26th, 2010

I came across this free Partition Recovery Tool. It appears to be exactly what you may need if your partition has been lost on your hard drive. I have a hard drive I want to try it out on. Check it out at http://findandmount.com/ .

If you need to just recover a file you deleted, maybe NTFSUndelete can find it and recover it for you. Get it free at http://ntfsundelete.com/ .

Another Malware Removal Tool

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I recently cleaned up an infection on a computer and I owe the success in part to this program called Hitman Pro. Hitman Pro calls itself  “True Cloud Computing Anti-malware” and I can say for certain that it definitely helped clean up the infected computer I was trying to clean. As with all antivirus/anti-spyware software, it may not catch all infections. But it is definitely another tool to use, and it doesn’t hurt to try the free version and see if it finds anything your current antivirus has missed. Check it out at http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro .

Keep A Set of Up-To-Date Apps

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Long delay between posts, thanks to the great weather we’ve been having in Central New York, but on with the show.  I have had some time to try out Ketarin, which you can get at http://ketarin.canneverbe.com/ . For what I use it for, it works great. I have selected some apps I frequently put on customers machines, and Ketarin makes sure I have the latest version, whenever I run it. As their website says “Keep your setup packages up-to-date…” . Check it out, it’s great, just as Ninite was on the web. Similar but different.

Speaking of Ninite, I found another useful site similar to Ninite.com at http://freenew.net/ . It’s very similar to Ninite, but I haven’t done an actual side-by-side comparison. Select the apps you want, and download & install them in one package. It’s called FreeApp and looks good.

Install Multiple Apps at Once!!

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

This Website is awesome for grabbing a bunch of free apps you want to install on a fresh windows install, or on a new PC. Just go to the website, click a few checkboxes for the apps you want, click a button, run the download and your apps are all installed. Anyone who hasn’t tried it, has got to give it a whirl. Check it out at http://www.ninite.com.

Prevent USB Drive Infections!!

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Some infected computers are capable of infecting your USB flash drive merely from inserting the drive into a usb port on the PC. Panda has a little program that can prevent this by preventing autorun from running on the drive, no matter what Windows computer you put it in. It’s called Panda USB Vaccine and you can check it out at http://research.pandasecurity.com/panda-usb-and-autorun-vaccine/ .  I have done it to my own flash drives and I like what this does.

Fix Dead Pixels in Your Monitor

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Two programs to check out today. One just tests LCD monitors for bad pixels. You can use it on a new LCD monitor to easily detect a bad pixel. It’s called InjuredPixels and you can get it at http://injuredpixels.codeplex.com/.  The next program actually attempts to free up a frozen/dead pixel. It’s called JScreenFix. If you find a bad pixel on an LCD monitor or TV, it can’t hurt to give it a try. Check it out at http://www.jscreenfix.com/ .

Bandwidth Monitor ( and more…)

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

This tool I found does a great little job of checking the bandwidthusage of your computer. They claimto be an “easy to use TCP/IP protocol monitor which can be used to see your exact throughput on both incoming and outgoing data”, and ” lets you see how quickly your data goes from your computer to another computer on the internet, tell you how many other computers your data must go through to get there, and also graphs your CPU usage of your system! This can be especially useful in identifying if your computer is what’s slowing things down, or if it’s your internet connection.”  All in all, a useful little tool you should check out. Get it at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm .
