DNS Benchmark Utility

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I have recommended OpenDNS over and over again as a better alternative to your own ISP’s DNS Server. In addition, Google has released their own DNS Servers for the public to use. I use both in my household, for different reasons, but now I can benchmark them both, as well as a host of others. Steve Gibson of www.grc.com has created an awesome little benchmark utility for DNS. For me, Google’s DNS Servers were faster than most. Steve Gibson is presently still working on documentation for the DNS benchmark utility, but you can check it out and play with it at http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm .

A Few Good Tools

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

There are some common problems with Windows XP, that occur at random, or when malware has infected it. I use Dial-a-fix quite a bit for this, but it’s showing it’s age. A new tool I recently found out about is XP Quick Fix, and it can fix a bunch of Windows XP small little problems. It’s worth a look at, so check it out at http://leelusoft.blogspot.com/2009/07/xp-quick-fix-10.html.

A tool to repair Internet Explorer is FixIE. It re-registers all the concerned dll & ocx files required for the smooth operation of Internet Explorer. Check it out at http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-internet-explorer-with-fix-ie-utility/.

SuperAntiSpyware recently created an online scanner that you can use to scan computers that are infected. Check it out at http://superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html .

A Few More Helpful Backup Tools!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

The importance of backing up your data can never be stressed enough. If you want a program to backup selected files, check out one or all of the following. One I just recently learned about seems to be a good solution though I haven’t tried it myself. It’s called SimpleBackupTool and it looks to be just as the name implies. Check it out at http://downstairs.dnsalias.net/simplebackuptool.html . Another fairly simple one I like is called Karen’s Replicator, and I have used it in the past, and liked it very much. Check it out at http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp . One last fairly simple to use solution is the one I use all the time now. It’s called SyncBack and I love it. Check it out at http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html .
If you’re interested in Cloning an entire partition or hard drive, then another cloning choice is from Easeus and it’s called EASUS Todo Backup. Check it out at http://www.todo-backup.com/ .
If you have just certain files you edit alot and want to backup everytime you edit it, the solution may be AutoVer. It seems to be perfect for a real time backup and personal versioning system. Check it out at http://beanland.net.au/AutoVer/.
